The economy of Pistoia is based mainly on the commercial sector, where plant and flower nurseries play a dominant role. Also the industrial sector has some important points of excellence in textile, engineering, furniture, footwear, mechanical, food and plastics factories.
With a population of about 90.000 the city is well developed and is home to many offices for companies in the Pistoia, Prato and Firenze metropolitan area.
Thanks to the expansion of the University of Florence, which opened several degree courses in Pistoia, the city is becoming an important university centre, focusing mainly on healthcare, agriculture, transportation and tourism management.
Tourism is increasing in the area mainly because of Pistoia’s beautiful city centre and countryside, not to mention the famous ski resorts that have attracted skiers and mountain enthusiasts for decades.
